Before electricity was even utilized to its fullest potential, people already entertained themselves with stage dramas and other performances. The art of acting is a career that allows people to express their emotions and inner thoughts through the guise of someone else. Over the years, people eventually had the opportunity to see actors perform through other platforms. Although films and TV series have provided new ways of telling stories, the career of an actor is, more or less, unchanged.
Most of the time, production crews prefer their characters to be portrayed by well-known and charismatic performers. However, an actor’s look and performance aren’t the only things that can catch the audience’s attention. Although it’s often overlooked, the clothes a character wears can reflect their psyche and overall aura. Besides that, it’s an eye-catching prop. Whatever its purpose may be in the end, one cannot deny that their outfit can be as charming as their acting.
For this article, we will be talking about a few films that show actors in their most dapper and charming look. Through the years, several filmmakers have spent a significant amount of their investment money just on their characters’ clothes. Well, since we’ll be showcasing some of them, it’s safe to say their hard work truly paid off in the end.
The Seven Year Itch (1955)
At this point, it would be a surprise to find someone who doesn’t recognize Marilyn Monroe. She was an actor, singer, and model well-known for her beauty, though she eventually proved she was more than just looks. Throughout her career, Monroe was quite the celebrity, with her movies grossing around $200 million – that’s approximately $2 billion today. However, one of her most iconic moments under the limelight is arguably in the 1955 film The Seven Year Itch. The movie includes the now-famous scene of the actress wearing her signature white dress. To this day, this shot of Marilyn Monroe still carries a high degree of relevance in pop culture – it’s printed in shirts, posters, and even recreated by other people.
The Great Gatsby (2013)
Movies are one way for us to see what life was like in the past and what it can be in the future. For 2013’s adaptation of the F. Scott Fitzgerald novel, The Great Gatsby was truly a sight to behold. Besides a great performance from actors like Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire, the film also beautifully portrayed its period set pieces and fashion sense – so much so it even led celebrities like Paul McCartney to host Gatsby-themed parties. With its lovely visuals gaining so much popularity, it comes as no surprise that The Great Gatsby, like its 1974 counterpart, took credit for winning that year’s Oscar Award for Best Costume Design.
Sex And The City (2008)
For a film crew to create a TV series that revolved around characters with a sophisticated fashion sense, it would be a disservice to not spend investment money on hiring a good costume designer. 2008’s Sex and the City not only gave us entertaining performances from its cast members, but it was also an opportunity for big-name fashion brands to promote their products. In fact, fashion designer Manolo Blahnik gained so much popularity after the film’s release that he even got tired of his customers associating his works with it – though he did thank the movie for his brand’s increased popularity.
Inception (2010)
Throughout his ongoing career as a filmmaker and writer, Christopher Nolan has been known for giving moviegoers a unique and refreshing journey with every film he releases. Although they may be hard to understand at times, one can safely bet that Nolan’s movies undoubtedly leave viewers thinking even after the credits start rolling. Well, before his recent release (Tenet) made its way to select theaters, the director provided audiences with a mind-boggling experience with Inception. For a film involving protagonists stealing information from people’s minds through dreams, who would’ve thought that these very characters would do it with style? Well, besides its jaw-dropping set pieces, Inception also has its lead actors wearing the finest of suits while they proceed with their work.
