Calling It Quits: Moments That Made Actors Almost Leave The Set
During our childhood days, many of us would imagine ourselves as characters in a fantasy setting. With just a few toys and a little creativity, we become completely immersed in this new world that we put ourselves into. However, as we grow, we begin to no longer have time to do these things. Fortunately, we have books, music, and video games to help us go back to these worlds. Even so, there’s still another way to relive these fun childhood moments.
Like other lines of work, mastering the art of acting is a lifelong investment that actors have to commit to. However, if there’s one good thing about pursuing a career performing onstage or in front of the camera, it’s that you can live out many of your childhood fantasies. Over the years, several films have depicted what life would be like at specific points in the past, present, and future. Some even go farther into the realm of imagination and incorporate elements like magic, mythology, and some scientific concepts into their stories. Even so, working as an actor can still be quite a challenge for some. In fact, some of these stars were even close to leaving the set midway.
Mike Myers – Wayne’s World
Since its release, Mike Myers’ comedy film Wayne’s World has earned quite the following. It was, and still is, a popular film thanks to the actors’ performance and their well-placed movie references – like the T-1000’s surprise cameo. However, there was a point in production when Myers was close to abandoning his now-iconic acting credit. Early on in the movie, there’s a scene where Wayne and his friends were headbanging in a car to Queen’s hit song Bohemian Rhapsody. Apparently, the studio had plans to use a “cheaper” song instead, something made by Guns n’ Roses. After hearing this, Myers insisted that they stick with the Queen record, or else he’ll quit. Thanks to his insistence, the actor and the film managed to make Bohemian Rhapsody’s popularity rise to even greater heights – from number 9, it rose to the number 2 spot on the US charts.
Jim Carrey – How The Grinch Stole Christmas
Among his many talents, perhaps it’s Jim Carrey’s mastery in acting and comedy that takes the title for the best investments he’s made in his career. Over the years, the actor has become quite the figure in the film industry, thanks to movies like Ace Ventura, The Mask, Dumb and Dumber, and The Truman Show. However, let’s talk about his other famous role, The Grinch. Throughout the production of How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Carrey spent around two hours before filming began, sitting on a chair as the makeup team put on his prosthetic makeup – he had to spend another hour taking them off. This daily routine became such a hassle for Carrey that he almost wanted to quit halfway through. Fortunately, the actor received assistance from a CIA agent, who taught him torture-resistance techniques.
Michael Keaton – Batman
Nowadays, actors taking superhero roles can wear their costumes while still feeling comfortable. However, in the earlier years of cinema, superhero costumes weren’t as comfy – even when studios spent plenty of investment money on them. One such example is Michael Keaton during his time as the iconic caped crusader Batman. Before portraying two other wing-loving characters, Keaton made a name for himself in Tim Burton’s Batman. However, his time as the titular hero wasn’t all easy sailings. The superhero costume was so uncomfortable that it even made Keaton claustrophobic, causing quite an inconvenience to their schedule. With that said, the actor still pushed through in the end, impressing both audience and critics with his performance. Fortunately, the sequel, Batman Returns, allowed Keaton to wear a more comfortable suit.
Leonardo DiCaprio – The Revenant
If you were to ask anyone who the most Oscar-snubbed actor is, they would probably mention Leonardo DiCaprio. Even so, that doesn’t mean he doesn’t have any acting chops. Over the years, Leonardo DiCaprio has impressed moviegoers with his acting credit in films like Inception, Django Unchained, and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. However, the actor did earn an Oscar for his amazing performance as Hugh Glass in the film The Revenant. With that said, his experience throughout the filming process was anything but easy. At one point, DiCaprio, a proud vegan, had to do a scene where his character eats a bison’s raw liver. At first, he was offered an edible gelatinous prop. Since he thought it didn’t look real enough, DiCaprio willingly volunteered to eat the actual thing – all in the name of good cinema.
In a sense, acting is fairly similar to other lines of work. After all, we would need two things to help us succeed in the long run: hard work and determination.
